Reclink Australia Werribee is asking for new or used sporting goods to be donated to the centre, for the subsequent distribution to disadvantaged individuals in the municipality.
The group’s founder, Peter Cullen, said sports gear could be quite costly for struggling families and Reclink didn’t want any usable items going to landfill.
“We’re looking for anything from a surfboard to a table tennis table, soccer balls, outgrown bikes or football boots,” he said.
“Even if people wanted to buy something brand new, that would be great.”
While some of the equipment will be donated outside of Wyndham, Mr Cullen said most of people’s donations would go right back into the community.
“Our message is that we want to include the unincluded, it’s all about outreach,” he said.
Mr Cullen said sport is about people coming together in a fun environment, especially after spending so much time indoors during the pandemic.
“Sport teaches you that hope is born in perseverance, getting up, getting up and getting up again,” he said.
“If you get your children playing sport early, formally, or informally, it improves things like greater bone and muscle strength.”
Residents can drop their donations off at 11 / 13 Gerves Drive Werribee on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am-3pm.
Sports groups and organisations can also donate pre-loved club sporting equipment.
