A new P-12 school will be built in Werribee South if the coalition is successful at the November state election, signifying the activation of the East Werribee Precinct.
Comprising 775 hectares of land bordered by Hacketts Road and the Princes Highway, the East Werribee Precinct is owned by the state government.
In August, Wyndham council launched a campaign calling on all candidates to commit to developing the land to generate more jobs.
Mayor Peter Maynard said council welcomed the coalition’s announcement.
“[The] announcement meets two of our key advocacy asks in the lead up to this election: new schools, and the activation of East Werribee,” Councillor Maynard said.
“We know our community is growing at a rapid rate –the 316,000 people that today call our city home will grow to 500,000 over the next 18 years.
“As the community grows, we want to see investment in the infrastructure to support this growth. Schools are a key part of this.”
Point Cook Liberal candidate Angela Newhouse joined Cr Maynard and opposition education spokesperson David Hodgett in Werribee South on Thursday, November 10 to announce the pledge.
“I have taught at Point Cook schools for the past four and a half years, so I know how important it is to build a P-12 school here as soon as possible,” Ms Newhouse said.
“Putting the first landmark building in East Werribee will help attract businesses here and start creating a huge, thriving white-collar business and employment zone.
“East Werribee P-12 will bring the Werribee South community together allowing their kids to go to one school. At the moment, students living in Werribee South are zoned to 10 different schools, four of which involve inconvenient and dangerous freeway crossings.
“It will be great to see Werribee South kids together, and joined by many students from the south and west of Point Cook in a brand new state-of-the-art school.”
