Cultural site cleanse in Truganina

Wyndham council conducted its first cultural site cleansing for a capital works project on land set to be the home of a new community centre in Truganina.

Bunurong Elder Uncle Mik Edwards and his son Eric Edwards led mayor Peter Maynard and councillors Susan McIntyre and Robert Szatkowski, and guests in a ceremony on Bunurong Country.

Wyndham council said he cultural site cleansing recognised and paid respect to traditional Bunurong practices and was an opportunity to honour the importance of connection to land, culture and community.

“This is a meaningful, significant milestone for our city,” Cr Maynard said.

“Wyndham city is deeply committed to developing and nurturing strong partnerships with the Traditional Owners of the lands on which Wyndham is built.”

Council said the new community centre in Truganina will be a safe, warm and enticing place where local people of all ages and backgrounds gather, connect and engage in community.

Construction of the Truganina Community Centre will commence in late 2022 and is due for completion in 2024.

This $18.4 million project was supported by the state government, with $4 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund, $3 million from a Building Blocks Grant and $921,000 from the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.
