Ever wanted to find out about history and the role the Point Cook RAAF base played during the Second World War?
Wyndham Libraries is inviting residents to hear cultural historian Dr Steve Campbell-Wright speak about the Point Cook RAAF air base and its once secret involvement in the war.
The air base trained personnel including women in uniform for the first time and hosted secret trials of new technology and, covering 341 hectares, it is also the birthplace of the Australian Flying Corps and the Royal Australian Air Force.
The Central Flying School opened at Point Cook in February 1914, with the first flight
on March 1.
Flying training commenced on August 17, 1914, 13 days after the start of World War I.
