When you think about the role and importance of food, it is in an aged care home that for many it takes on a life of its own. Food is more than just nourishment, for nearly every society it is an integral part of life. Think about the food that you grew up with, the memories smells can conjure up; the family events that occurred around a meal and just the simple pleasure of dinner with family or friends. For the cooks amongst us, there is the satisfaction of beautifully prepared food, fresh from the oven (we will conveniently forget the disasters that ended up in the rubbish!).

The lovely residents at Manor Court in Werribee love to discuss food at theironthly meetings and there is always differing views on how something should be cooked. Sultanas or currents in the bead pudding? Easy solve, just rotate them. They also have a smaller group discussion with residents to help select the menu options for the month and there is a regular request for favourite recipes which can be added to the menu.

Catering for all tastes has its challenges, even with at least two main options for every meal.

Executive cef Carmelo Santo says ‘We try over best to select food that most people will like. But we also have to consider those with dietary requirements, to ensure they have the variety in their diet as well“.

Manor Court has two onsite cefs and dozens of onsite food critics to ensure the highest standard of food.

Food is also used in some lifestyle activities. Pikelets, bread, puddings are always popular – especially getting to eat the outcome.
