There are many priorities on Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw’s list as she prepares for her campaign as a Liberal candidate for the Werribee seat at the November state election.
Cr Shaw said she supported Liberal leader Matthew Guy’s pledge to build a $900 million children’s hospital and $100 million for a multi-use stadium and nearby train station in Wyndham, but had additional community projects she would be advocating for.
“I want to see the duplication of Ballan Road, I want to see the continued activation of East Werribee, obviously continuing to support our local businesses … who are still recovering from the multiple lockdowns,” she said.
“I want to be advocating [for a] top five Australian university to the East Werribee campus, to give people in our community more choices around where they can study and work … [and] more secondary schools.
“I want to see more funding for the arts in Wyndham [and] funding for the Chirnside Park and Soldiers Reserve master plan, upgrading the Werribee Train station, and fixing multiple issues on Duncans Road.
“The list is really long because I don’t think we’ve had that real focus at a local level that we need to start seeing.”
Cr Shaw said her family has lived in the community for over 100 years and believes she is a “true local” who is ready to see the community receive what it needs and deserves.
“Because it is deemed to be a safe Labor seat and a safe Labor area, it just makes me want to advocate harder for change,” she said.
“It makes me a little frustrated that people continue to vote for the same party to represent us here.
“They need to think about who is going to be the best local representative that’s going to really fight hard, is really going to look at real solutions for Werribee and I think that’s me.”
