Speeding tops long weekend offences

More than 7000 offences were detected by Victoria Police during Operation Scoreboard over the AFL Grand Final long weekend, including 94 incidents in Wyndham.

During the five-day statewide road policing operation, police targeted high-risk driving behaviour, with a particular focus on speeding, impaired driving, and distraction.

A total of 7466 traffic offences were detected during the operation, with almost 40 per cent of those for speeding.

In the municipality, speeding offences also topped the list of offences with 29 recorded instances.

Police detected 12 unregistered vehicles, followed by 11 disobey signs/signals offences.

Nine mobile phone offences were recorded and through preliminary breath tests and roadside drug kits, nine drink/drivers were intercepted.

Automatic numberplate recognition technology assisted with the capture of eight disqualified drivers and four unlicensed motorists.

“This blatant disregard for the rules will not be tolerated, and police will continue to utilise ANPR technology to detect and remove unauthorised drivers from the roads,” assistant commissioner road policing Glenn Weir said.

“Many of these penalties and infringements could have been avoided if drivers simply slowed down, paid attention to the roads and obeyed the speed limits.”

There were six impoundments in Wyndham, four seat belt offences and two cyclist offences.

Ass Comm Weir warned residents now was not the time to become complacent, and said the state is experiencing high levels of road trauma not seen since well before the pandemic.

“Police will continue to be on high alert for motorists engaging in risk-taking behaviour that puts other road users in danger,” he said.

Operation Scoreboard was conducted from 12:01am Wednesday September 21, to 11:59pm Sunday, September 25.
