The Twisted Stitches Group have just finished knitting blankets for Ukrainians in need, but are already looking for their next community project.

The group meets at the Grange Community Centre every Monday and has been running for about 14 years.

The centre’s community development team leader Vanessa Fairchild knit about 15 blankets since the beginning of winter.

“We’ve got Ukraine at the moment, but we’re always looking to donate knitted goods, that was one of the reasons we put it on social media, to say thank you but two to see if we could find other places that needed donation,” she said.

“For the grange community centre, this what it’s all about and this is what we’re trying to put out into the community.

“We supply the wool, the knitting needs, the space, and tea and coffee, so the local community can come in [and] it fills in some of their time, they get to socialise as well as do good for other communities.”

Ms Fairchild said the group often donates to local charities, and most recently donated knitted hats and children’s items to the Uniting Church in Werribee.

“Sometimes they just come in and they’re looking for a project,” she said.

“It’s become a social thing.”
