Four Werribee Giants baseball players are part of the Victorian team participating inaugural Barclay Cup.

Named after Jacinda Barclay, an Australia sportswoman who played elite level baseball, football and American football before dying in 2020, the Barclay Cup is an all-girls event, open to girls aged 12-16 years from all over Australia.

The Giants’ Alanah Rose, Zali Packer, Oli Walker and Lauren Nguyen will play for the Victorian Dingoes, one of two Victorian teams participating in the competition this week.

Speaking before the event, the girls said they are excited to be travelling to the Gold Coast and showing the country the skills they’ve been honing with their teammates and coaches.

“I’m looking forward to playing with friends I’ve made through this tournament and as part of the BV All Star Girls team at the state winter championships earlier this year, but am also excited to meet girls from all over Australia who have the same love for the game as I do,” Rose said.

Packer said she is equally excited, “I’m looking forward to new friendships and the opportunity to play in a team with girls who are usually my opponents”.

The girls are coached by Alan Sutherland and their assistant coaches are Abbey McLellan and Morgan Dotty who play club baseball in Melbourne’s west and have represented both Victoria and Australia in baseball.
