Wyndham council is issuing a reminder to residents that a free, professional snake catching service is available on referral from council.
Council said that based off of previous years, snakes are most active across the municipality during September and October.
“While there is a free snake catching service available for residents, the best action remains
prevention,” Wyndham council’s community safety portfolio holder councillor Susan McIntyre said.
“We ask that property owners and other Wyndham Residents do their bit to keep snakes away from their property by keeping yards clean, by cutting their grass short and by ensuring rubbish is disposed of properly in bins.”
In 2021, there were 347 calls made to council regarding snakes, including after hours and over weekends.
Snakes can be found anywhere. However, council says residents living near natural parklands and waterways are being asked to remain extra vigilant throughout the peak season and warmer months.
If a snake is sighted, council recommends keeping a safe distance and not touching or approaching the reptile, and removing any children or pets from the area.
Residents are encouraged to immediately call council to arrange a professional snake catcher.
Council said the snake catching service will attend as soon as possible, however it is important to note that if residents choose to contact a snake removalist independently, residents will be responsible for any cost incurred.
If a resident believes they have been bitten by a snake, council recommends they seek urgent medical attention by calling triple-0, or if they are concerned that their pet may have been bitten, contact a veterinarian for advice.
