Victorian opposition leader Matthew Guy has committed to invest $100 million towards a multi-use stadium and train station in Wyndham if the Liberal National Party wins the state election in November.
The funding will expand on construction that has begun on Sayers Road in Tarneit, to build a stadium that once completed would be home to A-League champions Western United.
Mr Guy’s commitment will contribute towards the establishment of an indoor area, with up to 8000 seats for basketball, netball, concerts and cultural events, a swim school, a childcare and a new train station, set to be constructed within a short walk from the stadium.
“Melbourne will now be the Australian home of soccer and that’s fantastic. Building this precinct is not only a winner for the western suburbs, but a winner for all Victorians,” Mr Guy said.
“This project will put thousands of locals in jobs, and provide a space for the community to use and be proud of for decades to come.”
Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the council welcomed the announcement and hoped it would be the first of many election commitments for the municipality.
“The suburb of Tarneit more broadly will be home to 131,161 people by 2041 – a 129 per cent increase on current population numbers,” Mr Maynard said.
“It’s imperative that residents in this area have access to the community and sporting facilities they need.
“We’re committed to working with candidates of all political persuasions to secure commitments that ensure our fast-growing community has access to much-needed infrastructure and services.”
A state government spokesperson said the Labor government had delivered numerous projects in Wyndham, including the re-opening of Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations in 2015, the increased capacity for trains between Wyndham Vale and CBD, and had also delivered 30 football infrastructure projects in the western suburbs.
“Whether it’s supporting grassroots community sports or delivering record spending on roads and rail infrastructure – only Labor delivers for the west,” the government spokesperson said.
