Wyndham has recorded the second highest daily COVID-19 cases in the state, as the number of active cases rises to 2600.
As of Monday, the municipality had a seven day average of 430 cases.
Our Medical Williams Landing general practitioner Dr Darko Sulava encourages residents to follow the health advice recommended by the state government.
“[We] strongly encourage those eligible to come forward for their winter booster dose, not only does this protect individuals, but family members and the local community,” Dr Sulava said.
“We suspected that we’d see another wave of COVID cases in the area during the winter months, and sadly, case numbers are again rising in the area.”
With influenza cases also on the rise, Dr Sulava is urging community members to take precautionary measures to protect themselves against the illness.
“There has been some confusion regarding the COVID-19 vaccination program and the influenza vaccine,” Dr Sulava said.
“What’s important to note is that COVID vaccines do not offer protection from influenza and vice versa, so it is necessary to have both.
“Whilst previously there was a need to wait between the two, for 2022, it is possible to receive both vaccines with no time restrictions in place.”
For the fortnight ending July 3, 33,342 confirmed cases of influenza were recorded for the state.
“Last year we encountered mask mandates, travel restrictions, density limits and border closures, so the low case numbers were to be expected,” he said.
“It is sensible for us to plan for a steep increase in cases as we welcome more visitors to the local area and return to pre-pandemic activities.”
On Monday, Casey recorded the highest daily COVID-19 cases, with 519, followed by Wyndham, Greater Geelong with 394 cases and Whittlesea recording 364.
