Greener plans for the west

Werribee and Footscray community members are encouraged to use their green thumbs for the greater good of the region, as part of a community tree planting day at Victoria University’s Werribee campus on Friday, July 29.

As part of the state government’s $5 million More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West initiative to plant 500,000 trees in the region over the next two years, Victoria University staff, students and volunteers will be planting 5100 trees at the Werribee campus.

Melbourne’s western suburbs has a 5.5 per cent green cover compared to 17.4 per cent in Melbourne’s inner south east and 25.9 per cent in the east.

There are four two-and-a-half hour sessions to choose from on the planting day, with an option to pre-book free bus transport from VU’s Footscray Park Campus for residents outside the Werribee area.

Participants can register as individuals or teams, with free coffee and opportunities to win prizes during the day.

Registrations close on Wednesday, July 27.
