Police nab risky drivers

Police have intercepted 97 motorists breaking the law in Wyndham during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Operation Regal saw officers targeting high-risk driving behaviour across the state over four days from Friday, June 10 to Monday, June 13.

Excessive speeding made up almost 40 per cent of recorded offences in the municipality, with 35 drivers stopped.

Road policing assistant commissioner Glenn Weir said it was “completely unacceptable” that “so many motorists” were continuing to take risks on the roads.

“We continue to detect a high number of speeding and unauthorised drivers – these are people that are making a conscious decision to blatantly disregard the road rules,” Mr Weir said.

Police also caught 13 motorists disobeying signs or signals, 12 unlicensed drivers and five disqualified motorists.

Eight drug drivers and one drink driver were discovered in Wyndham from a total of 78,350 tests across the state.

Unregistered vehicles accounted for nine of the offences, and police recorded six mobile phone offences and four seatbelt related violations.

Police say they will remain highly visible on roads across the state as the Victorian school holiday period begins next week.

“Police will continue to target and enforce against those who engage in risky driving behaviour, and we make no apologies for this. One bad decision is all it takes to cause a tragedy,” Mr Weir said.
