Hard work to continue for Wyndham

Wyndham is only scratching the surface in the Big V men’s state championship competition.

Having won their first 10 matches and sitting on top of the ladder, Wyndham has been the standout side so far.

While the side is in a good spot, coach Lucas Allen said there was still plenty of work to do.

“There’s no point winning 10 games to start the season and then not winning any more,” he said.

“It’s a long journey. We had a good week last week, but the week before was rough.

“This weekend is a big game against Sunbury. They’ve only dropped one game and that was against us.

“It’s an important game in the context of the season.”

Allen said he’s never fully happy with any game, knowing there is always more things to work on.

He said they have to continue to work hard to lift the standard even more.

“I’m not going to be pleased until the end of the season,” he said.

“When we start to do something better, then there’s other areas that need to improve.

“We’ll continue to work and maximize what we’re doing.”

Allen said the most pleasing thing from his perspective was that everyone was stepping up to contribute and not leaving it to just one player.

Maurice Howard leads the way, sitting second in average points scored per game.

“We’ve had multiple contributors,” he said.

“Maurice has had a 40 point game and KG [Kavione Green] and Keenan [Gorski] have had 30 point games.

“Abram Tong has been really strong in defence and Aaron [Dolny] and Manel [Ayol] are starting to find their feet.

“Everyone is playing a role. They’re not just role players, but contributing players.”

Allen said the group had become really close, despite only being a fairly new group.

“They work hard in practice and enjoy each other’s company off it.”

As the halfway point of the season approaches, Allen said it was pretty simple for them.

“We have to continue to work,” he said.

“Every week we look at our game. We always find things we did well and things that we can continue working on.”

Wyndham face the Sunbury Jets at Boardman Stadium tonight at 8pm.
