Every parent, carer or guardian who sends their child to walk to school hopes for them to return safe and unharmed.

For this year’s National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday May 20, pupils at Iramoo Primary School and their families will skip the daily drive and stroll to school instead.

“In the lead up to the event we have put up posters around the school and classroom teachers have discussed the event with their grades,” Iramoo Primary School active travel co-ordinator April Anapliotis said.

“If they live too far to walk the whole distance, they are also encouraged to park closer to school and walk part of the way.”

Ms Anapliotis said the school aims to inform pupils of the advantages associated with active travelling.

“We hope the students learn the benefits of walking to school, that walking to school is good for the environment, their physical and mental health,” she said.

“The event will also remind students of important road safety rules when walking to school.”
