Mural brings colour to Werribee laneway

A new large scale mural designed to colourfully and culturally transform the bare grey walls at Station Place laneway in Werribee will soon be launched to the public.

Named ‘72 Genders’ by artist David Lee Pereira, the art piece will explore the themes of Wyndham’s rich and diverse community.

Pereira says the work will include lots of colour, to paint the municipality in a little bit of brightness.

“It is a large colourful floral mural incorporating a mix of Victorian, Australian, Asian and European orchids, the various flowers represent and reflect the diversity of our community,” he said.

“Murals are a way to connect with the community outside the gallery space.”

The design has been conceptually developed to pay respect to the traditional owners of the land while also aligning with Wyndham’s key curatorial themes of foregrounding, habitat, localism and futurism.

Pereira hopes people view the piece as “multi-dimensional artwork” that is “beautiful, with a touch of weird”, and aspires to evoke an emotional response from observers.

“The large flowers and insects remind the community of our connection to nature and the landscape,” he said.

Installation of the artwork commenced on April 19.

The completed piece will be unveiled to the public on May 17, with a creative catch-up event and Pereira’s introduction to the artwork.
