The Werribee River Association launched their 10-year action plan at the Riverbend Historical Park this week.

Developed in partnership between Traditional Owners, government and community organisations, The Lower Werribee River Amenity Action plan sets a strategic vision for cultural values, improved amenity and community access along the river.

“The amenity and the natural landscape improvements

articulated in the Lower Werribee River Amenity Action plan are designed to have a positive impact for not only plants and animals, and also for human health,” Werribee River Association’s community and business development manager Lisa Field said.

“We also know, especially after the social restrictions of the pandemic, how important it is to spend time in nature.”

The improvements mentioned in the plan include lining gaps in the path network to provide a continuous trail along the river, increasing river access points to support activities taken on and beside the water and improving open space facilities.

There will also be new imperative and wayfinding signage to convey the heritage and stories of the river and increased vegetation and tree planting to enhance biodiversity.

“We certainly want to see improvements to the riverine parkland and we encourage more people to get involved in supporting their local waterways,” Ms Field said.

The WRA invites residents to get involved in community projects.

“Come join one of our 4 Litter Blitz groups, offering a community clean up each almost every weekend. Or check out one of 4 Landcare groups that is doing conservation work each month, as well as other special planting days,” Ms Field said.
