Mosque open day draws in hundreds

Virgin Mary Mosque opened its doors to more than 200 visitors on March 14, but says people in the community are welcome to attend the place of worship any time.

Mosque open day, an initiative by the Islamic Council of Victoria, is an effort made to build dialogue, understanding and respect between community members.

Committee president Hanif Shaik said it gives muslims a chance to negate any misconceptions people may have.

“The event gives people the opportunity to ask pressing questions about things that are portrayed in the media that may not be accurate and gives them an opportunity to really understand the religion.”

Virgin Mary Mosque is located in Hoppers Crossing and is one of more than 20 mosques that participates in the annual open day.

Visitors are taken on guided mosque tours, can engage in discussion, try on hijabs and are treated to different cultural foods and barbecues.

Mr Shaik said people often attend the event looking for answers, but leave with a better perception.

“Terrorism in Islam is always at the top of the list, people also ask shariah law and about misconceptions about relationships. You’re not limited to any kinds of questions,” he said.

“There is more common ground than differences in the way that we live our life and the way that we love our community.”
