Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing soccer cubs get girls onside

Girls-only programs are to be launched at Point Cook and Hoppers Crossing soccer clubs in a bid to get 250 local girls playing the world game by next year.

The programs, supported by Wyndham council, will give girls, including Imogen (pictured) a chance to develop soccer skills and build self-confidence.

Cr Peter Maynard said the five-week programs were perfect for any primary school girl wanting to try soccer.

“As well as the direct benefits for girls, the programs also send a positive message to our community to challenge gender stereotypes and contribute to a more balanced participation of young women and men in sport and the administration of sport in future,” he says.

“With many professional sports clubs doing all they can to address gender bias and inequality on the field and in society, it’s great to see our local clubs actively recruiting and welcoming girls.”

The programs start at Point Cook Soccer Club at Saltwater Reserve from 5pm on Monday, October 20, and at Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club at Grange Reserve from 6.15pm on Wednesday, October 22.
