Good-natured conservation groups

The Werribee River Association (WRA) is encouraging residents to get involved with two new conservation groups based at the Werribee River Park and Cobbledicks Ford.

Both of the groups, which launched during February 2022, meet monthly.

The groups have been created with support from Wyndham council and Melbourne Water.

WRA regeneration project officer Maryann Weatherill said the main purpose was to get the community involved in caring for the natural environment through restoration work.

“Within an urban landscape, there are huge pressures on the environment, and land managers have so much responsibility on their shoulders, with quite often, limited resources,” Ms Weatherill said.

“We need dedicated groups of volunteers willing to get out there and help look after our environment.

“It’s crucial for protecting our nature reserves, waterways and wildlife.”

Ms Weatherill said the benefits of joining the groups included the social aspect, plus the physical and mental health benefits of being active and outdoors enjoying nature.

Ms Weatherill said no prior experience or knowledge was required to join the groups.

“It doesn’t matter if you know a lot about plants and the environment, or nothing at all,” she said.

“They are a great way to learn, and everyone is welcome.”

The Presidents Park group meets the first Thursday of the month at the car park off Heaths Road, near the Shaws Road bridge and the dog park.

The Werribee Riverine group meets on the second Tuesday of the month, corner Wattamolla and Riverview Drive, Werribee.
