“THE best thing that ever happened with Coode Island was that the wind blew the smoke over the eastern suburbs,” said Yarraville resident Julie Beckwith, to ensuing applause and cheers at a public meeting held by the Coode Island Review Panel in Werribee last week. Her sentiments were echoed by the more than 300 people who crammed into Centenary Hall to voice their opinions against any move of Coode Island chemical storage facilities to either Point Cook, Altona or west of Corio.

Further questions have been raised about a State Government decision not to upgrade the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s urgent care unit after it was revealed that 29,000 people sought medical attention at the unit last year. The figures – almost the same as the number recorded at St Vincent’s Private Hospital emergency unit – come just one week after the Banner revealed Health Minister John Thwaites and Werribee MP Mary Gillett had broken a pre-election promise to upgrade the Mercy’s urgent care unit.
