Plan for You Yangs, Serendip Sanctuary’s future

The state government has released the You Yangs Precinct Masterplan, to help ensure the You Yangs Regional Park and Serendip Sanctuary are protected into the future.

The You Yangs, a series of granite ridges that rise up to 319 metres above the Werribee Plain, are located approximately five kilometres from Little River.

Serendip Sanctuary, on the Western Volcanic Plains, is a 250-hectare protected region near the You Yangs.

The masterplan sets out how both these areas will be managed in the future.

A statement from the state government read: “The plan aligns with the aspirations of the Wadawurrung people, traditional owners of the land, for future joint management of the park.

“More immediately, opportunities for cultural education, cultural trails and visitor information are proposed.”

Under the masterplan, Serendip Sanctuary will continue to be available for wildlife conservation and breeding programs.

Visitor facilities for schools and groups in the sanctuary will be upgraded.

A recommendation to create a mountain-biking hub in the You Yangs Regional Park with improved facilities, a kiosk and storage rooms is also included in the masterplan.

Other options mentioned are to upgrade the visitor information centre, carparks, picnic and BBQ areas, along with existing tracks and trails to support activities like bushwalking, trail-running, sightseeing, rock-climbing, abseiling and horse riding.

Lara MP John Eren said: “The You Yangs and Serendip Sanctuary are special places for the community and I am delighted to see a plan that celebrates the cultural heritage of the area and seeks to improve the way people enjoy the park.”
