Point Cook youngster Kai Heron was among the lucky children who were selected to toss a commemorative coin before a match at the Australian Open.
Kai, aged seven, tossed the ANZ commemorative coin to commence the round two match between tennis players Naomi Osaka and Madison Brengle on January 19 at Rod Laver Arena..
The 2022 commemorative coin features Australian tennis legend Margaret Molesworth (1894-1985) who won the inaugural women’s singles title at the Australasian Championships 100 years ago in 1922, and successfully defended her title the following year.
Recognised as one of the top 10 players in the world at the time, Molesworth also became one of the first women to coach tennis professionally in Australia following her retirement from competition.
The commemorative coins gifted to the 150 young people who tossed them at the Open.
ANZ retail banking managing director, Katherine Bray, said: “We are so proud to support the dreams of young tennis players and provide them with a once in a lifetime opportunity to flip the ANZ commemorative coin on the iconic Australian Open courts.”
This year marks the fifth year of the commemorative coins – with previous years featuring Dylan Alcott, Rod Laver, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Melville Reid and Judy Tegart Dalton.
