Residents from a Werribee retirement home have donated a large amount of food to a charity that helps people doing it tough to put a meal on the table.
Treasurer of the Federation Village’s social club, Lexie Smith, said residents donated 21 boxes of non-perishable food items plus 15 dozen eggs to FareShare last month.
“We managed to fill many boxes with pasta, rice, flour and many other non-perishable food items which were then picked up by FareShare,” Ms Smith.
She said the residents have collected donations for FareShare previously, but that their latest collection was by far the largest.
“The residents of Federation Village have helped in the past and wanted to help again those that are vulnerable and struggling, the numbers of these have tragically increased due to the pandemic,” Ms Smith said.
“We hoped that the food would give vulnerable people dignity and hope that they realise that many people care about them.
“It was wonderful watching the amount of food donated increasing daily, knowing it was to be used to cook the best meals possible for many individuals and families to receive.
“It was also good for us to be thinking about others doing it tough and not ourselves, being isolated, lonely, missing family and friends.”
Ms Smith said that FareShare’s chief executive, Marcus Godinho, sent the village residents a “very nice thank you letter” for their efforts.
“The residents of Federation Village Werribee would like to encourage others to donate to FareShare, it is an inexpensive, feel-good thing to do,” she said.
