Safe seats, safe kids

Wyndham parents and carers have been invited to attend a free child car restraint fitting and safety check program next week.

The Safe Seats, Safe Kids (SSSK) events are hosted by Kidsafe Victoria in partnership with Neighbourhood Houses Victoria, supported by the state government.

Neighbourhood Houses Victoria project manager Melinda Spiteri said a SSSK session would be held at the Jamieson Way Community Centre in Point Cook between 10am and 2pm on Monday, December 13.

Ms Spiteri said that SSSK professional fitters would help parents and carers make sure their child car restraints were correctly installed, and also provide education and advice on the topic.

She said that 70 per cent of child car restraints were incorrectly installed or used, posing a serious safety risk to youngsters.

“Correctly fitted and used child car restraints and booster seats play an important part in protecting children from serious injury and death in the event of a crash,” Ms Spiteri said.

She said that to ensure the maximum level of protection was provided for children while travelling, it was important for restraints to the right size; correctly fitted to the vehicle; and properly adjusted and fastened for the child on every trip.

The SSSK program will also run sessions next year, starting on Tuesday, February 13 between 10am and 2pm at the Jamieson Way Community Centre, 59 Jamieson Way, Point Cook.

Sessions will also be held at the Wyndham Park Community Centre, 55-57 Kookaburra Drive, Werribee from Tuesday, January 11 between 10am and 2pm.
