Ball gets rolling on soccer stadium

Early works on the Wyndham City Stadium precinct at Sayers Road, Tarneit recently kicked off with the first sod of soil being turned on the site.

Western Melbourne Group (WMG), the parent company of Western United, commenced construction of a haul road to provide the project with access to water, gas, electricity and internet.

The haul road will also give heavy vehicles access to the location of the future stadium.

The road is expected to take between eight to twelve weeks to complete.

Once the Wyndham City Stadium precinct is built, it will be home to a 15,000 capacity elite football stadium, a training precinct with a second 5000 capacity stadium, a residential precinct with about 1000 residences and a commercial mixed-use development.

WMG chairman Jason Sourasis said he was delighted to see the first earth-moving vehicles on-site.

“This is a proud moment for WMG, the football club and the community who have been on this journey with us from the start,” he said.

“Just to get to this point has been years of preparation and planning, and I’d like to thank our partner Wyndham city council for their hard work and support.”

Western United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis also thanked Western United members and the fans for their support.

“It’s fantastic that early works have commenced on the site, this is the biggest milestone for our club to date,” Mr Pehlivanis said.
