Big Build heats up

Travellers are being advised to expect big delays as work on the state government’s Big Build escalates during the summer.

There will be major works on 10 rail lines and four roads including the West Gate Bridge, West Gate Freeway, Monash Freeway and Western Ring Road (M80).

The West Gate-CityLink-Monash (M1) freeway will undergo an upgrade, beginning with annual maintenance of the West Gate Bridge between Boxing Day and 4 January, 2022.

Three of the bridge’s five outbound lanes closed across the timeframe, as bridge strengthening works, pavement reconstruction, excavation and drainage works also take place.

From January 11 to late February, works will take place to widen the West Gate Freeway, with the closure of Williamstown Road under the freeway and its city-bound entry and exit ramps, as well as the West Gate FreewayM80 outbound ramp and the M80-Princes Freeway ramp.

Motorists have been warned to expect significant delays of up to an hour at times on the West Gate-CityLink-Monash corridor during summer.

Drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead and seek alternative routes.

As well, the Princes Freeway inbound exit ramp to Geelong Road will be closed from Friday, November 26 to Sunday, November 28, between 9pm and 5am each night.

Additional closures will occur from Friday, December 3 to Sunday, December 5, between 9pm and 5am each night.

During summer, two more level crossings will also be removed Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing and Ferguson Street, Williamstown.

The new North Williamstown station is set to open in December.
