Bridge to new names

Members of the public are being urged to vote on the names of four new bridges which have been built in Wyndham for the Regional Rail Link Project.

VicTrack’s Bridge Naming Competition is giving residents the chance to have their say on shortlisted names for the road bridges over the Geelong Line at Ballan Road and Derrimut Road.

The shortlisted names, which were also nominated by the public, were required to commemorate a local community member or event.

The five shortlisted names for the Ballan Road bridge are Dulcie Shanahan Bridge, George Scolaro Bridge, John Nolan Bridge, Mervyn Smith Bridge and Vic Mayall Bridge.

The three shortlisted names for the Derrimut Road bridge are Nino Arrigo Bridge, Tom Beasley Bridge and Carter Bridge.

The bridge at Leakes Road received one eligible nomination and will become known as Baden Powell Bridge.

Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said members of the public could still suggest names for the bridges at Davis and Dohertys roads.

Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said: “This is a great opportunity for Wyndham residents to name a bridge in recognition of a member of their own community.”

Werribee MP Tim Pallas said that naming the bridges, which all look similar, would assist emergency services in telling the structures apart.

“We have some great shortlisted names for two of the bridges relating to people with strong historic connections to the area and people now have the opportunity to vote for their favourite,” Mr Pallas said.

Voting and name suggestions will close on November 19, see victrack.com.au/bridge
