Wyndham’s unemployment rate hit 7.7 per cent in the June quarter, according to figures released by the federal government.
The data showed that in comparison, Wyndham’s unemployment rate in June, 2020 stood at 6.5 per cent.
In the latest set of labour force figures, which dated from between April to June this year, there were more than 11,500 unemployed Wyndham residents.
Municipalities that recorded higher unemployment numbers than Wyndham included Whittlesea with an 8.4 per cent jobless rate, Dandenong with an 8.6 per cent jobless rate, Melton with an 8.9 per cent jobless rate and Brimbank with a 10.1 per cent jobless rate.
Hume, in the northern suburbs, topped the state with an unemployment rate of 12.1 per cent.
Wyndham’s future focused portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said the council was committed to working with partner agencies to support residents in finding employment and educational pathways.
“Wyndham residents have been resilient through the pandemic and now is the time to rebuild and help our city move forward,” Cr Shaw said.
“Council works with a range of organisations to link our residents with the services they need.”
Cr Shaw said the council has partnered with the state government and The Huddle to deliver the Jobs Victoria Advocate program.
“The program assists Wyndham residents looking for employment,” Cr Shaw said.
“The service provides information, referral and connection to available resources and supports.”
In addition, Cr Shaw said a council initiative called Opportunity Wyndham provided local businesses with free tools, resources and access to recruitment services and local talent to build stronger, more inclusive workplaces.
“The initiative brings together Wyndham city council, local employment partners and businesses to build local pathways to employment, with support from the Victoria state government,” she said.
“Council encourages residents seeking assistance to contact Opportunity Wyndham team that can put you in touch with agencies/people that can help you take the next step”.
