A new public outdoor space featuring re-purposed containers, seating and greenery will be constructed in front of the Wyndham Cultural Centre.
Wyndham council said work will begin on the project later this month. Construction is expected to be completed in September.
The former Raffael’s annex will be demolished to make way for the new space.
Mayor Adele Hegedich said once complete, the container space would complement the west end of Watton Street.
“This exciting space has been designed as a place for people to meet and catch up while also providing a welcoming entrance to the Wyndham Cultural Centre, Wyndham Art Gallery and Werribee Library,” Cr Hegedich said.
“Neon lights will also make the space come to life in the evening, creating a fun, playful vibe while supporting Watton Street’s evening economy.”
Wyndham creative city portfolio holder, Cr Marcel Mahfoud, said the council was also working with a local business operator to launch a new 12-month pop-up version of MADE on Watton.
The council rented a vacant shopfront in Watton Street earlier this year, which it transformed into a market-style site for local artists and designers to showcase their products.
Cr Mahfoud said the new outdoor space would be an “ideal location” for the next MADE on Watton pop-up venture to be held.
“Visitors to the west end will be able check out the latest new MADE on Watton stallholders, watch a theatre show, visit the Wyndham Art Gallery and dine in some of Wyndham’s top restaurants and eateries – all within walking distance,” Cr Mahfoud said.
“This is all about bringing people back to our much-loved town centres and shopping strips and ensuring our businesses can bounce back from the pandemic as quickly and as safely as possible.
“This exciting new space is the first piece of a proposed redevelopment of the Wyndham Cultural Centre, and we look forward to keeping the community updated as the plan for this site evolves.”
