A great idea literally has taken seed in Wyndham.
Seed libraries have been launched at the Point Cook and Manor Lakes libraries.
Wyndham’s climate futures and environment portfolio holder, Cr Robert Szatkowski, said the seed libraries would provide a great opportunity for residents to share their seeds.
Seed library members will be able to collect up to three free seed packets per month from either the Point Cook or Manor Lakes locations, to plant in their own gardens, schools or community gardens.
“The Wyndham seed library aims to build food resilience and promote sustainable gardens by supporting local community, share seeds and grow their own produce and habitat gardens,” Cr Szatkowski said.
“The seed library will include fruit, vegetables, native and indigenous plants.
“This will be such a fantastic opportunity to share seeds grown in Wyndham and create beautiful and flourishing green spaces.”
Seed library members will be encouraged to harvest and return seeds for others to borrow.
If members donate seeds, they can collect more seeds that month or receive credit for future seeds.
In order to join the Wyndham Seed Library, residents must first become a member of the Wyndham City libraries.
A lot of plants are seasonal, so there is no guarantee what seeds will be at the libraries, but contact 8734 8930 or WyndhamSeedLibrary@wyndham.vic.gov.au to find out what seed species will be available when you plan to visit.
