Residents and visitors to Sanctuary Lakes have been invited to participate in a research study about leisure activities and bird feeding in the area.

Deakin University and Zoos Victoria are conducting the study in conjunction with Sanctuary Lakes Resort.

The online survey, which is anonymous and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, includes questions about how people use the lake and surrounding public spaces in Sanctuary Lakes, including for exercise, fishing, feed the birds, bird-watching, picnics, barbecues and water sports.

Wyndham Cr Susan McIntyre, who was part of the team which put the study together, said residents were lucky to live in an area which included a diversity of wildlife and environments such as Sanctuary Lakes, Point Cook beach and the adjoining nearby coastal park.

Cr McIntyre said the survey’s responses would help to put together ideas about how to educate the broader community about nature.

“We need to understand how the way we behave impacts upon other elements of the community and have an understanding and appreciation that how and what we do impacts on the wider community,” she said.

Cr McIntyre said the research study would run for about four weeks, and that organisers were hoping to get at least a few hundred responses.

People who complete the survey can go into the draw to win one of seven $50 Coles gift cards.
