Tributes are flowing for long-serving Westbourne Grammar School teacher Jim Mitchell after he passed away recently.
Mr Mitchell worked at the school for 31 years, beginning as an English teacher in 1981.
He became head of English, before taking on a variety of positions including the head of Molland House, vice-principal of pastoral care and vice-principal and head of the senior school.
In a post on its Facebook page earlier this month, Westbourne Grammar described Mr Mitchell as “a fine educator, strongly committed to achieving the best outcomes for our students and staff”.
“As many will know, Jim loved this school,” the post read.
“During his 31 years here he saw Westbourne grow and prosper in terms of enrolments, facilities and academic success.
“On behalf of our community, we extend our deepest sympathies to Jim’s family.
“A tribute to him and a recognition of his service to the school will be organised for early next year.”
When interviewed for the school’s 115th anniversary, Mr Mitchell said: “I believe in learning. I believe there is good in every human being. I believe a school like this is unique because it’s a very happy place.”
Hundreds of people commented on the Facebook post about Mr Mitchell’s passing, including former Wyndham mayor Kim McAliney.
“Jim was a beautiful person and so much part of the school community and students’ lives,” Ms McAliney wrote.
Many of Mr Mitchell’s former students also shared their memories of him, writing that he was “a true gentleman”, “an outstanding educator” and “a wonderful teacher”.
