Iramoo Community Centre, providing a range of community programs and activities to advance social inclusion, vibrancy and resilience of Wyndham residents, stepped up during COVID-19 lockdowns by providing an online platform.
Centre manager Renae Paul says that to reduce the feelings of loneliness and isolation in the community, they had to adapt quickly.
“We offered weekly Zoom sessions to provide an interactive experience, which our community was needing,” Renae says. “These sessions ranged from gardening, cooking, yoga, arts, crafts and tai chi classes.
“We also set up a YouTube account where we could post videos of some of our regular programs, share tips and provide a variety of workshops. We currently have more than 70 videos!
“Collectively, we had to boost mental health and wellbeing. Our community was craving interaction and positivity, when there was so much negativity going around.
“As manager, I thank my team, volunteers and our community for staying connected.”
Iramoo is now opening to the community, as restrictions ease. COVID-19 restrictions will be in place to ensure social distancing, and hygiene measures are being met.
Renae says it’s great to see the community returning to the centre, with programs and services restarting.
“The centre is focusing on offering a variety of free or low-cost workshops to encourage the community to feel safe and confident to reconnect.
“The aim of these workshops is to provide a safe environment to improve the mental health and wellbeing of all. These will be small groups, keeping in line with the restrictions.”
Iramoo has a variety of support groups, while online programs will also continue during this time for those not quite ready to leave home.
“Community centres have always played a vital role in bringing together communities and reducing isolation – a place for people to feel safe and connected.
“It was challenging having to close our doors to the public, knowing it goes against everything we do. We’re very happy to be reconnecting with our community.”
