Wyndham council’s new state-of-the-art pound has opened in Point Cook.
The new pound is located at Unit 1, 6 Wallace Avenue, the former site of the Animal Referral Hospital.
All services moved from the former pound on Old Geelong Road to the new site on October 30.
The new pound can be accessed from the Princes Freeway, via Boardwalk Boulevard and Palmers Road.
Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the modern facility would provide a safe and secure place for lost animals.
The new building has been purpose-built and is designed to accommodate the comfort of animals, with an indoor temperature-controlled building to house lost pets.
“Council has been searching for a new pound site for some time,” Mr Thorpe said.
“The current pound building has reached the end of its lifecycle.
“As a former Animal Referral Hospital, the new pound building is designed specifically to accommodate the needs of cats and dogs.
“This is an exciting new modern way of keeping cats and dogs safe before being reunited with their owners.
“It is exciting for Wyndham City to be able to take on this great space and continue to provide a service that looks out for animals in our community.”
During the 2019-20 financial year, 42.09 per cent of animals collected by Wyndham council officers were reclaimed by their owners and 21.77 per cent were re-homed.
The council also carried out 21 animal-related prosecutions within the 12 months, including cases related to dog attacks, unregistered dogs at large and nuisance orders related to barking and fencing matters.
All official opening events for the new pound have been postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
