My Wyndham: Anushka Mohanty

Eight year-old Anushka Mohanty is a talented young singer and musician. A video of her performing the Italian song Bella Ciao recorded more than 4000 views in a single day, when it was posted to Facebook earlier this year. Anushka chats with Alesha Capone.

What do you like about living in Point Cook?

It’s been just a year since I have moved from Camberwell to Point Cook. But within this short span of time, I am loving every bit of Point Cook. First, I am a proud student of the prestigious Alamanda College. Second, I am surrounded by lush green parks and reserves near my vicinity. Third, I love ambling around the hustling and bustling Point Cook Town Centre with my parents over the weekends. Though, things are way different due to Covid now.

When did you first start singing?

My Mom says since I started talking. Well, I started singing at the age of two and got really serious when I was gifted with a guitar on my sixth birthday by my parents. Since then, there has been no looking back. I started taking guitar lessons and dedicated more time to music.

What do you enjoy about singing?

I love singing songs of many genres and different languages. I try to make fusions of Bollywood, English, Latin and Spanish songs. I always try to experiment with different leading and strumming patterns in guitar. Though I have never taken vocal lessons, I would definitely like to take some formal training someday.

How did you feel, to see your video do so well online?

I get super motivated to do even better when my videos/songs get appreciated by the audience. They are the source of great inspiration. I went bananas when I had 4k views on the first day itself for my Bella Ciao video.

Does anyone else in your family sing or play a musical instrument?

My Mom once used to sing during her school days and introduced me to this beautiful world. My Dad sometimes sings for fun. My maternal uncle also used to play drums back in India. So yes, they definitely have influenced me big-time.

Would you like to add anything else?

I was awarded as a good public speaker in my school and have been chosen to speak during the assembly. So, I think I am a good orator too. I have a Facebook page in the name of Anushka Mohanty and a YouTube channel where I often upload my singing videos. Both the social networking sites are managed by my Mom, since I am too young. I would like more people to watch my channels and give me constructive feedback on my performances.
