Students from Westbourne Grammar School in Truganina are working on a project to help minimise the impact of food waste on the community.
Year 9 students Sarah and Madi, who are part of a group of four students working on the initiative, said the aim of their year-long project was to spread awareness of food waste.
The girls said a key part of the project has involved setting up an Instagram account which contains facts, recipes and tips.
“We have been trying to inform the community on the effects of food waste and how they can make a positive contribution on our Instagram page @lovefoodnotwaste,” Madi said.
“If we all start actively trying to reduce our food waste then we will only increase in number and the positive effects will only go up.”
The students said they have also been collaborating with a program named Eat My Garden, which encourages people in the community to grow their own produce and share it with others.
Sarah and Madi said the pandemic has had a “big impact” on their project.
“Additionally a large aspect of our project was going to be conducting food swaps within the local and school community but due to COVID-19 restrictions we have had to rethink this and adapt the idea to make it safe for all,” Sarah said.
“We are aiming to resume food swaps when restrictions ease in addition to running our Instagram account.”
