Plans to upgrade the K Road Cliffs in Werribee South include a new boardwalk and viewing platforms overlooking the Werribee River.
Wyndham council has awarded a design contract for the K Road Cliffs masterplan – a $2.4 million project which aims to reduce erosion and protect the environment, while boosting tourism and visits to the site – to Urban Initiatives.
Highlights of the project include drainage works to manage the significant erosion at the cliffs; a new cliff-top walking path; a staircase with terraces for seating and nature photography; new car parking; seating; and signage.
Wyndham council is contributing $900,000 to the project, while the state government has provided $1.5 million from its Growing Suburbs Fund.
Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the council was also finalising options for riverbank access at the cliffs.
“The K Road Cliffs are one of Wyndham’s best-kept secrets, and once these works are complete, we’re confident that the area will attract both locals and tourists alike,” Cr Marcus said.
“This project will include drainage works to redirect stormwater run-off away from the fragile cliff edge to protect these cliffs and make the area safer for visitors.
“This project is a key feature of the Wyndham Coastal and Marine Management Plan, a five-year plan designed to enhance the unique qualities of the Wyndham coastline for greater access and enjoyment and to facilitate appropriate coastal development and tourism.”
Cr Marcus thanked the state government for its investment in the project.
