Werribee mother Kath Berger is pedalling 815 kilometres to raise funds for a cause close to her heart.
Ms Berger’s daughter Alison – who is aged in her thirties – was recently diagnosed with multiple Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Ms Berger said this had inspired her to join the MS Gong Ride Virtual, to raise funds for MS Limited, which supports people with the illness and is dedicated to finding a cure.
The MS Gong Ride Classic traditionally involves a fundraising annual bicycle ride from Sydney to Wollongong.
However, due to COVID-19, this year the event is inviting Australians to fundraise by cycling a certain distance around their local area, during October.
Ms Berger said she has chosen to cycle the distance from Melbourne to Wollongong, which is a whopping 815 kilometres.
Ms Berger said she would complete her kilometres around Werribee and also on her exercise bike at home.
“People say, ‘it must be really boring’. I say, ‘well, we’ve got Netflix these days, I can watch a whole movie while pedalling on my exercise bike’,” she said.
Ms Berger said she hoped to raise $150 for Ms Limited and that anything more “was a bonus”.
Ms Berger said she was hoping a cure would soon be found for MS, so that Alison could live for many years to come, and see her own daughters grow up.
“She’s absolutely amazing and I’m so proud of her, so it’s nice to be able to do something for her,” Ms Berger said.
