A young chef killed in a double fatality in Point Cook at the weekend has been described as “caring”, “gentle” and “passionate”.
Family and friends have taken to social media to share tributes to 27-year-old Gauravdeep Narang.
“He was a gem of a person,” one friend said.
“His friends are shocked and cannot process it. He was such a good friend, a caring, mature, understanding and beautiful human being and very hardworking and helpful.”
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Palmers Road and The Strand about 10.55pm on Saturday, following reports of a crash.
Police believe a silver Nissan Skyline and a white Hyundai Accent collided at the intersection.
Nearby residents rushed to the aid of the drivers but were unable to save them. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their cars.
Some residents who live near the crash site have labelled Palmers Road “notorious” and urged police to increase patrols in the area.
There are calls for the speed limit to be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h.
The road was also the scene of a two-car collision on Christmas eve in 2017, which left three people dead.
“The speed limit on that road, like much of [Melbourne’s West], is way too high. Three killed there in 2017, so it’s not a one-off,” one resident wrote at the weekend.
Point Cook CFA, whose members were called to the accident, took to Facebook on Sunday to urge drivers to take care on the roads.
“[This is] a gentle reminder to always drive safe on our roads, following the rules and regulations,” the post said.
“Our thoughts go to the families involved in this accident.”
The fatal collision followed another serious accident in Tarneit on Saturday night which resulted in two men being taken to hospital.
Police said a green Mazda 2 and a silver CX7 collided at the intersection of Leakes and Davis roads about 10.10pm.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash cam or CCTV footage of either incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A GoFundMe account which has been set up by Gauravdeep’s older brother, Hardip, has raised more than $10,000 for the family.
Hardip said that before his death, Gauravdeep had been caring for their mother, who is paralysed.
The family is also still required to pay back Gauravdeep’s study loan, in India.
