Wyndham council has launched a review of off-leash dog parks across the municipality, to identify areas where new off-leash areas could be created.
Mayor Josh Gilligan said the council was undertaking the review “in response to requests that council has received from residents and land developers across the municipality wishing to see new dog off-lead areas established to service Wyndham’s growth areas.”
“The review, which has only just begun, will identify the gaps in the provision of dog off-lead areas across the entire municipality, including Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing,” Cr Gilligan said,
“This audit will then be used to develop a list of potential sites for new dog off-lead areas that will address these gaps.
“Council will undertake consultation with the community and other stakeholders once these proposed locations have been identified.”
According to the council’s website, there are 18 existing dog off-lead areas in Wyndham, including six in Hoppers Crossing, five in Werribee, two in Wyndham Vale, one in Werribee South, one in Point Cook, one in Truganina and one in Laverton North.
These areas include the rear of the council’s civic centre in Werribee; part of Presidents Park, a section of Campbell’s Cove beach foreshore; an enclosed dog park on the corner Forsyth Road and Perennial Drive; and part of Lawrie Emmins Reserve.
Cr Gilligan said that when the review was finished, the council would develop a 10-year plan to prioritise and stage the delivery of future dog off-lead sites.
“This review will allow Wyndham City to build on our network of off-lead dog facilities and will give dog owners more choice when taking their beloved pooches out to play,” Cr Gilligan said.
There are more than 20,000 dogs registered with Wyndham council.
