Katie Lewer has encouraged young people to enter this year’s Way Out West Youth Photography Competition.
The Wyndham council competition is open to entrants aged between 12 and 25 who live, work, go to school or socialise in Wyndham.
Mrs Lewer submitted a photo to the 2018 Way Out West competition, featuring a seagull with a very wide-open beak at Werribee South beach.
The competition’s judges selected the image as winner of the “Funniest Image” category.
“I hadn’t expected to win, so it was pretty cool,” Mrs Lewer said.
Mrs Lewer has also entered this year’s Way Out West contest, with a photo of a rosella.
Mrs Lewer, a qualified veterinary nurse, said she enjoyed taking photos of animals and nature.
“I think I’m really intrigued by the design of things, I really love animals and capturing moments, and sharing those moments with people who see the photos,” she said.
She said the biggest challenge of photography was having the patience required to get a great shot.
“For example, for my 2018 image of the seagull, I took a couple of hundred shots to get the right one,” she said.
She said that other young people thinking about entering the Way Out West competition should “just give it a go”.
Entrants are encouraged to submit photos in the categories of landscape; black and white; colour; or Way Out West (photos which capture life in Wyndham).
Entries will close at 4pm on June 26. Maximum one entry per person.
Winners of each category will receive $100 and a grand prize winner will receive $500.
