A man jumped from the balcony of his Williams Landing home this morning, to escape a group of men who broke into the residence and attacked him with a machete.

Victoria Police said the incident happened at an address on Ashwell Avenue, when several men broke into the premises by forcing a rear door around 1.30am.

The 37-year-old male occupant of the home was woken from his sleep after hearing noises. The man told police that he was attacked by one of the men, who was armed with a machete.

The victim sustained several lacerations to his arms before jumping from a balcony window into his front yard.

The group of men fled from the house prior to police arrival. Paramedics were called at approximately 1.30am and took the victim to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, in a stable condition with upper body injuries.

Investigators are still to determine what was stolen in the incident and if the victim and the offenders were known to each other.
