Charity begins at home

A Point Cook father and his two young sons have participated in some hair-raising antics in the name of a good cause.

Rajan Rao said that he recently decided to shave his head, and the heads of five-year-old Rayaan and six-month-old Zidaan.

However, before the shave, Mr Rao – with the assistance of his wife – cut his and his sons’ hair into Mohican shapes, before taking photos and posting them on social media.

Mr Rao also donated $100 to Werribee Mercy Hospital, and used the #coronacut hashtag to urge other community members to do the same, to show their support for the hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Rao said that with many barbers and hairdressers shut, it made sense to take things into his own hands.

“We thought we would make this fun and inspirational for other people too,” he said.

“It’s important for all of us to stay positive, and acknowledge what hospital and general practice workers are doing in this time – if you can, donate.”

Mr Rao said he had been encouraged to see other people join in the #coronacut efforts.

“I’ve had one person do it in Wyndham and a few others have said they will do it, I tagged people across the world, to try and get it to go viral,” he said.

Mr Rao said both he and his wife worked in healthcare, so it was “good to do something light-hearted” at a time of stress and anxiety.

Mr Rao is the regional manager of five medical centres in the west for Healius, including Werribee Primary Medical and Dental Central, while his wife is a GP at Arrowhead Medical Centre in Point Cook.
