Werribee RSL sub-branch president Daryl Ryan has urged Wyndham residents to mark Anzac Day at home this year.
Although the RSL’s traditional Anzac Day dawn service, gunfire salute and breakfast have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19 concerns, Mr Ryan said it was still important to pay tribute to the Australians who have served in wars and conflicts.
“Just remember what the day is about,” he said.
Mr Ryan said that due to the coronavirus, RSL members have not been able to sell Anzac Day badges at shopping centres, Bunnings or other outlets in the lead-up to April 25.
He said Werribee RSL usually used the money raised through the sale of the badges to support its welfare program, for veterans in need.
“People often don’t realise we have veterans in the community who come to us when they can’t buy food, can’t pay the rent or their rates,” he said.
“We use the funds raised through Anzac Day activities to help them out – this year, we’ll just have to find the funds from somewhere else.”
