Werribee Cup: Red Cadeaux to parade on big day

Three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux will be on parade at Werribee racecourse tomorrow, giving locals a chance to see the English galloper up close.

Red Cadeaux, who remains in quarantine at Werribee, will walk up and down the main straight about 4pm just before the main cup race.

Werribee Racing Club operations manager Rhiannon Ellis says the parade will be a great chance for people to get a last look at one of the best horses in recent years.

“This is something different. It’s the first time we have done something like this,” Ms Ellis said.

“He might not be back next year so it could be a last chance for people to see him.”

Tomorrow’s event also marks the return of racing at Werribee during the Spring Racing Carnival for the first time since 2007.

Ms Ellis said the club was glad the Cup meeting had been returned to November after being run in December the past two years.

“We’re very excited to be back in spring,” she said.

“It’s always your goal to have your race as part of the spring carnival and we would encourage everyone to get down to the racing club and enjoy the day.”

The $80,000 Cup is one of eight races on the card, with gates opening at 11am and the first race scheduled for 1.20pm.

The 2000-metre Cup race, scheduled for 5pm, will feature a field of 14 horses, including the Darren Weir-trained Something to Share, who will be ridden by Brad Rawiller.

Rawiller came second in last year’s Werribee Cup with Weir’s Hurdy Gurdy Man.

There will also be three Fashions on the Field competitions, with racegoers competing for the title of elegant lady, best dressed male and best dressed local, as well as children’s activities throughout the day.
