Hundreds of abandoned shopping trolleys have been collected by Wyndham council in the past 12 months.
The council’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the council had received 115 reports of abandoned trolleys and 200 trolleys had been collected.
“Abandoned trolleys are a major issue in our parks and reserves,” Cr Marcus said.
“They are an eyesore and can be dangerous to the community when placed on footpaths or roads.”
Cr Marcus said trolleys dumped in creeks and rivers could also cause a build-up of debris and contamination.
“We need everyone to step up and do their part for the environment, so I ask shoppers to do the right thing and bring their trolleys back to their local supermarkets after they offload their groceries,” she said.
“We encourage the retailers to be proactive and roll out new trolley technology, including a greater use of wheel locks and coin operated trolleys, together with a trolley tagging systems.”
