Volunteer nets top award

Netball keeps Hoppers Crossing’s Emily Lacy busier than most 21-year-olds.

She was recently named Wyndham’s Young Volunteer of the Year for her roles within the Hoppers Crossing Netball Association.

Emily was presented with the prestigious title at this month’s Wyndham Community Volunteer Awards which celebrate the achievements of some of the city’s many volunteers.

She was acknowledged for her dedication as a player, under 13s coach, committee member and first-aid officer.

“Emily is an outstanding 21-year-old who has demonstrated dedication in her volunteer roles,” the judges comments said.

“Since 2016 … she has been actively involved in supporting the Net-Set-Go skills development program for four to seven year-olds, and has regularly served as the first-aid officer.

“She has demonstrated conscientiousness in her support of young players and made an impact with her ideas on marketing to young people.”

Emily told

Star Weekly she was proud to have been volunteering at her club since 2007.

“I was down at the courts so much that the association just had me involved in more and more things,” she said.

She gives up her Saturdays and Thursday nights for her coaching duties and a few meetings here and there.

“I‘ve always loved playing netball and I love seeing the enjoyment that the girls get from playing and forging those relationships like I did. I also love to watch the up-and-coming stars of the game.”

Emily is completing a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science at Deakin.
