Police are putting drivers on notice as children return to school this week.
Operation Guardian will be running in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong from Thursday, with police keeping a close watch on school zones.
Westgate division road policing adviser Senior Sergeant Damien Madden said police would be on the lookout for drivers breaking road laws and parking restrictions, and he warned motorists against doing the wrong thing.
Council local laws officers will also be patrolling areas near schools, enforcing parking restrictions.
Senior Sergeant Madden said the operation was aimed at keeping children safe.
“Motorists are reminded that 40 km/h school zone and parking restrictions will be enforced.
“Children are harder for drivers to spot in traffic and parked vehicles, and young children sometimes act unpredictably near traffic.
“That’s why there are 40 km/h speed zones near schools. Please look out for and comply with speed signs and parking restrictions near schools.”
Senior Sergeant Madden said parking restrictions around schools were necessary to keep children safe and to give drivers picking up and dropping off children a safer environment.
“Park with consideration for other parents and for residents around schools,” he advised.
